Following the presentation\, small group guided tours will be available. \n\n6:00 Reception on the patio with Refreshments included\n6:45 Program\n7:30 Tours See note below regarding the Tour waitlist\n\nAbout Dr. Montgomery\nDr. Kirsty Montgomery is a British-born educator and administrator with a BA from Northwestern and two MAs and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. Dr. Montgomery has taught history to 3-12 grades. She served on the faculty of the Illinois Math and Science Academy and Omniscope Academy as well as teaching at Oakton Community College\, Northwestern University’s Center for Talent Development\, and the University of Chicago. She has presented at academic conferences across the globe and has published several articles\, book entries\, and publications. Dr. Montgomery was most recently Head of School at Lakeview Academy in Georgia and prior to that\, she led Northwestern’s Osher Institute. \nAbout the School\nAvery Coonley school was selected as the Historical Society’s Historic Site of the Year in 2006. DESCRIPTION:Free to the public. \nDG Historical Society is pleased to announce Israel Larry Blackburn as the Founder of the Year for 2024. \nIsrael Larry Blackburn was born into slavery on a plantation in Kentucky in 1818. He lived there until 1865\, when he joined the Union Army and was assigned to the 124th U.S. Colored Infantry.  He earned the rank of sergeant before his discharge six months later. \nBlackburn then moved his family north to Downers Grove. \nTo learn more\, click here >
