SUMMARY:Israel Blackburn: A Journey From Slavery to Founder of Downers Grove
DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand\, we are reprising this presentation on the life of Israel Blackburn. In case you missed this talk last year at the Downers Grove Library\, we  have been invited to the Helen Plum Library in Lombard for this talk. \nIsrael was born into slavery in 1818 in Kentucky. In 1865\, during the Civil War\, he performed garrison duty with the 124th U.S. Colored Infantry in Kentucky. Blackburn moved his family north to DuPage County\, Illinois\, and settled in Downers Grove shortly after the war. He became a respected member of the community and\, within a few years\, in 1873\, was one of the 38 founding signers of the Incorporation Papers for the new Village of Downers Grove. \nIn this presentation\, genealogist\, local historian\, and Downers Grove Historical Society President Marty Acks\, will tell Israel’s story by following the large trove of archival material that documents many aspects of his unique life. \nClick here to register on the Helen Plum Library website. DESCRIPTION:Please join the Downers Grove Historical Society and the Downers Grove Library on October 14 when the Historical Society will honor the Library as its Historic Site of the Year. \nThis special date is the 110th anniversary of the library. Guests will have an opportunity to walk around and view displays\, including historical photos and information. DESCRIPTION:Come join us at the Downers Grove Public Library to explore the places and learn about the people who made the history of Downers Grove Township. Founded in 1839\, by 1873\, DuPage County was divided into nine Townships. Downers Grove Township was and still is the largest with boundaries from County Line Road to Woodward Avenue and 39th Street to the Illinois & Michigan Canal. An area that started with just four major settlements\, Downers Grove\, Hinsdale\, Clarendon Hills and Fullersburg\, now includes nine villages. Gruen\nAttendees will then be among the first to see a new Downers Grove documentary! The Historical Society is partnering with Jim Toth of Node Films to premiere his new documentary titled Change: A Warming Warning which tells the fascinating life story of one of Argonne National Laboratory’s renowned scientists\, Dr. Dieter M. Gruen. This compelling film follows the life of this 102-year-old Downers Grove resident\, including his escape from Nazi Germany as a teenager\, to being recruited to the WWII Manhattan Project and how he ended up working at Argonne and settling in Downers Grove. SUMMARY:Israel Blackburn: A Journey From Slavery to Founder of Downers Grove
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special presentation on the life of Israel Blackburn. Israel was born into slavery in 1818 in Kentucky. In 1865\, during the Civil War\, he was performing garrison duties as part of the 124th U.S. Colored Infantry in Kentucky. Blackburn moved his family north to Downers Grove shortly after the war. He became a respected member of the community and within a few years\, in 1873\, was one of the 38 founding signers of the Incorporation Papers for the new Village of Downers Grove. In this presentation\, amateur genealogist and local historian\, Marty Acks\, will tell Israel’s story by following the large trove of archival material that documents many aspects of his unique life. Israel Blackburn was chosen as the Downers Grove Historical Society’s Founder of the Year for 2024. (Admission is FREE\, but you must register in advance by clicking the red button below.)
