SUMMARY:Israel Blackburn: A Journey From Slavery to Founder of Downers Grove
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a special presentation on the life of Israel Blackburn. Israel was born into slavery in 1818 in Kentucky. In 1865\, during the Civil War\, he was performing garrison duties as part of the 124th U.S. Colored Infantry in Kentucky. Blackburn moved his family north to Downers Grove shortly after the war. He became a respected member of the community and within a few years\, in 1873\, was one of the 38 founding signers of the Incorporation Papers for the new Village of Downers Grove. In this presentation\, amateur genealogist and local historian\, Marty Acks\, will tell Israel’s story by following the large trove of archival material that documents many aspects of his unique life. Israel Blackburn was chosen as the Downers Grove Historical Society’s Founder of the Year for 2024. (Admission is FREE\, but you must register in advance by clicking the red button below.)

SUMMARY:“True Daughter” Elizabeth Hartwell Rich to be Honored
DESCRIPTION:Buried in Lot 81 in Oak Hill Cemetery is a “True Daughter” a title given by the Daughters of the American Revolution to someone whose father fought in the American Revolutionary War. \nAt 11:00 on September 14\, 2024 this plaque will be dedicated on the grave of Elizabeth Hartwell Rich by the Downers Grove Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. All are welcomed to attend. \nElizabeth Hartwell was born in Lincoln\, Massachusetts on March 15\, 1777\, one of nine children born to Samuel and Mary Flint Hartwell. Elizabeth married Thomas Weeks Rich in 1806 in Lincoln\, Massachusetts and they had a family of 6 children before Thomas died in 1826. After Thomas died Elizabeth went to live with her daughter Louisa Rich Peet. When Elizabeth died in 1866 she was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in the Peet plot along with other members of the Peet family. \nBoth of Elizabeth’s parents played a part in the American Revolution according to local historians. On April 19\, 1775 Samuel Hartwell (1742-1829) a clockmaker by trade was a Sergeant in the Lincoln\, Mass. Minute Man company of Captain Smith under Col. Adijah Pierce. He served from 1776-1778 as quartermaster and participated in the Battle of White Plains. The Rich home was on the Bay Road and when British troops came to their home in 1775 Mary Flint Hartwell (1747-1846) Elizabeth’s mother ran down the road to alert the neighbors that the British were coming. The Hartwell Tavern in Lincoln is today an historic American Revolutionary site operated by the National Park Service as part of the Minute Man National Historical Park. Opened to the public it is staffed with park rangers in historic colonial attire. Mary Flint Hartwell died in 1846. When Samuel Hartwell died in 1829 he was buried in the old Lincoln Burial Ground in Lincoln\, Massachusetts. His name appears on a plaque there. \nDowners Grove is pleased to have Elizabeth Hartwell Rich now identified as a True Daughter and honored with this plaque.

SUMMARY:2023 Living Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Living Cemetery is annual Society event that brings together the talents of local drama students and adult actors who depict the early settlers buried in the historic Main Street Cemetery. They tell the stories about how these brave pioneers made their way to our area and about their many contributions to creating the Village of Downers Grove. Making the cemetery living again is done with the help of the Paper Moon Players (directed by local resident Marilyn Ludwig) and the Living History Interpreters of the 8th Veterans Reserve Corps (directed by Craig Dorsey). \nEstablished in 1856\, the cemetery is a village landmark and the resting place of about 100 early Downers Grove residents. \nMore information about those buried in the Main Street Cemetery.

DESCRIPTION:Bruce Swanson has been named the 2023 Montrew Dunham Award recipient by the Downers Grove Historical Society. \n“Holey” and “holy” are two words easily associated with Downers resident Bruce Swanson. He is an avid golfer who frequently plays nine holes or more\, and he is known for his charitable works. As a result\, the Downers Grove Historical Society (DGHS) is naming Swanson the recipient of its 2023 Montrew Dunham Award. This award honors those whose significant service and contributions to the Village of Downers Grove have earned them a place in its history. \nHe will be honored on October 7th at Lincoln Center (935 Maple Avenue\, Downers Grove\, IL) at 1 pm;  the public is invited. Admission is free\, but pre-registration is requested; more details will be posted on the DGHS website in September. Many know him through his volunteer activities\, and many more enjoyed having him as a  5th or 6th grade teacher during his 30+ years with Downers Grove District 58.   If you have words of appreciation or anecdotes you would like to share\, please email the Downer Grove Historical Society at  info@downersgrovehistory.org.   And please let us know if you’ll be there. \nRegister to attend:\nTo RSVP\, click here.
