Pvt Arthur Haase, a prestigious member of the Iwo Jima marine corps, was killed on February 25th, 1945. He was the husband of Katherine Haase as well as a father to two young sons, Charles, 4, and Richard Allen, 2 years old. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Arthur T Haase who lived at 5322 Lane Place. A beautiful memorial service was held in his honor at St. Joseph’s Church. Burial was at Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery, Hillside
Graduating from Downers Grove High School in 1936, Arthur was a successful member of the track team, winning many honors. The mile run was his favorite event, and he was one of the stars of the West Suburban conference. He was born in Chicago, Oct 26, 1917, the family moved to Downers Grove where he lived for several years. He was married to Miss Katherine Ferrel in Chicago on May 27th, 1939, and they lived in Oak Park, IL. He worked for Maywood Farm Dairy. He left for service from the Maywood draft board on March 2nd, 1944. He was then assigned to the Marines and trained at Pendleton California.
His name is engraved on the plaque at Memorial Park in Downers Grove honoring local servicemen who never returned home from World War II.
