The Downers Grove Historic Home Program has reached an exciting milestone: 100 homes officially recognized as Centennial or Historic Homes in Downers Grove!
5306 Washington Street, The Esther M. Smart House, was the 100th house to be approved as a Historic Home in Downes Grove. Having been approved just a few minutes before, 4832 Wallbank Avenue was the 99th house to be approved. This achievement celebrates the community’s deep appreciation for its architectural heritage and the homeowners who help preserve it. 100 homes and counting!
A Program Rooted in History
Recognition of historic homes in Downers Grove began more than four decades ago with the Centennial Home Program, launched in 1984. As the name suggested, the program originally focused on houses that had reached the remarkable milestone of 100 years of age.
In 2016, the program evolved and was renamed the Historic Home Program. The update broadened eligibility to include homes over 50 years old and introduced improved guidelines to help homeowners research and document the history of their properties. The change opened the door for many more homes to be recognized for their place in the community’s story.
Honoring Homes—and Their Stories
Each home accepted into the program represents more than just a building. These homes tell the story of the families, builders, and generations who shaped the character of Downers Grove. Reaching the 100-home milestone is a testament to the dedication of homeowners, volunteers, and local historians who value preserving that history.
Important to Know
The Downers Grove Historic Home Program is separate and distinct from the Village’s Landmarking Program. The Historic Home Program is strictly honorary. Participation does not restrict homeowners from making exterior changes to their property, nor does it qualify them for financial incentives such as property tax freezes or tax rebates.
Looking Ahead
As the program celebrates its 100th recognized home, the Historical Society looks forward to discovering and documenting even more of the remarkable homes that make Downers Grove such a special place.
If you believe your home may qualify—or if you’re curious about the history of your property—we encourage you to explore the program and join us in celebrating the homes that tell the story of our community.
