Black History Month Kicks Off at DGN with Israel Blackburn Presentation

The Downers Grove Historical Society helped launch Black History Month at Downers Grove North High School with a special presentation highlighting Israel Blackburn, an important figure in local history.

Marty Acks, president of the Downers Grove Historical Society, presented the story of Blackburn—an enslaved man for much of his life who later served in the Civil War and became one of the founders of Downers Grove. Acks shared this history with approximately 120 students, teachers, and librarians over three sessions held in the DGN library.

The presentation reflected the Historical Society’s ongoing commitment to researching, preserving, and sharing Downers Grove’s history. While the Historical Society researched Israel Blackburn for decades, Lois Sterba, local historian and board member, provided much of the basis for the content.

Students attended the presentation as part of an English class assignment, and several asked thoughtful questions following the talk. The visit also sparked interest in future collaborations, including possible presentations on the Underground Railroad and other local history topics.

The Historical Society is grateful for the opportunity to connect with students and educators and to share meaningful stories from Downers Grove’s past with a new generation.
