Downers Grove Historical Society Welcomes New Leadership

The Downers Grove Historical Society is entering a new chapter in leadership while honoring the contributions of the past. After serving as president for nearly four years, Amy Gassen is stepping down from the role. Amy will continue her service to the Society as a board member, ensuring her experience and passion for preservation remain at the heart of the organization.

“Serving as president of the Downers Grove Historical Society has been one of the greatest honors of my life. I’ve been deeply moved by the passion, generosity, and unwavering dedication of our board, volunteers, and members. Their commitment to preserving our community’s history has inspired me every step of the way, and I’m truly grateful to each and every one of them. I look forward to supporting the Society as it embarks on this exciting new chapter,” said Amy.

During Amy’s presidency, the Society co-produced three documentaries, including The Tivoli Theatre, which tells the story of the beloved historic gem and premiered to a sold-out audience. Under her leadership, the Society also hosted numerous community events, including Living Cemetery, A Night at the Tivoli, and the popular History on Tap pub crawl. The Historic Home Program, which honors older homes in Downers Grove, has flourished during her tenure. The Society also refreshed its branding and launched a new website. Amy’s leadership has strengthened the Society’s connection to the community and advanced its mission of celebrating and preserving the history of Downers Grove.

The Board of Directors has elected Marty Acks as the Society’s new president. Marty is a longtime lifetime member of the Historical Society. He has served as Treasurer for many years and Chair of the Historic Home Program committee. Marty brings both enthusiasm and vision to the role and is committed to continuing the Society’s legacy while guiding it into the future.

Other board changes include Kurt Metzler being elected Vice President and Rich Kulovany will take over the office of Treasurer.

The Downers Grove Historical Society invites the community to join in thanking Amy for her outstanding contributions and congratulating Marty, Kurt, and Rich as they begin this exciting new chapter.
