Born on April 30, 1913, First Lieutenant Elmer E. Fox gave his life in defense of his country on his 32nd birthday, April 30, 1945. He graduated from Downers Grove Community High School with the Class of 1931.
Lt. Fox served during World War II as a member of the 302nd Engineer Combat Battalion, attached to the 77th Infantry Division. He was an officer in an engineer combat unit, where he and his fellow soldiers carried out some of the most demanding and dangerous work of the war. Their missions included constructing and repairing bridges, clearing enemy obstacles, building roads, and maintaining vital supply routes—all often performed under enemy fire in support of advancing Allied forces in the Pacific Theater.
For his service and sacrifice, First Lieutenant Fox was awarded the Purple Heart, presented to those wounded or killed in action in the line of duty. He also received the Bronze Star Medal, recognizing heroic achievement and meritorious service in a combat zone.
Following his death, First Lieutenant Fox was laid to rest at the Honolulu Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, a sacred resting place honoring thousands of American service members who served during World War II and other conflicts.

His name is permanently engraved on the plaque at Memorial Park in Downers Grove, honoring local servicemen who never returned home, ensuring his legacy endures within the community he once called home.
