The Downers Grove Historical Society reached a new milestone in September with the Historic Home Program approval of the Mergenthal Building at 1015 Maple Avenue. Constructed in 1881, it is the first primarily commercial property recognized through the Historic Home Program, although its second-floor apartment has been a home to several families over the years.
The modest front-gable building has served Downers Grove for more than 140 years. Its first floor has housed a furniture store, repair shop, tinsmith, grocery store, bakery, several delicatessens, Downers Grove Plumbing and Heating and currently an interior design and home shop. For many years, families also lived in an apartment above the businesses.
The building was developed around 1881 by Jacob Saylor, a Naperville lumber dealer. Peter W. Mergenthal, a Prussian immigrant and wagon maker, purchased it in 1883 and owned it until 1910. One of its longest periods of ownership began in 1915, when Downers Grove resident Emma Gress purchased the property. She later operated a grocery store there and retained ownership until her death in 1943.
Special thanks to owner Michelle Gentile who operates Michelle Gentile Interiors + Home in the building. Her interest in its past prompted the research that uncovered the stories of the many people who have owned, worked, shopped and lived there.
The recognition of the Mergenthal Building reminds us that a community’s history can be found not only in its grandest homes and landmarks but also in the small, hardworking buildings that have quietly adapted and served generations of residents.
