History and hospitality came together on October 4 as the Downers Grove Historical Society recognized First United Methodist Church as its 2026 Historic Site of the Year. Many worshippers stayed after the service for the presentation, celebrating a congregation whose roots reach back to 1836 and whose landmark sanctuary has welcomed generations since 1928.
The celebration continued in the parlor, where guests enjoyed cookies, lemonade and conversation while getting a closer look at the commemorative plaque. It was a warm gathering honoring the church’s enduring place in Downers Grove history.
