Founded in 1836, First United Methodist Church was the first organized church in Downers Grove, serving the community even before the village was incorporated. The congregation first gathered in a log homes  before building its first church in 1852 on land donated by Henry Carpenter. After that building was lost to fire in 1879, a new church was constructed, followed by the beloved “Welcome Church” in 1894 to accommodate the growing congregation. Continued growth led to the construction of the church’s present home in 1928—a beautiful sanctuary that has stood as a landmark of faith and community at 1032 Maple Avenue for nearly a century.

For more than 130 years, the church has been a familiar landmark in the heart of Downers Grove. Its distinctive architecture, rich history, and enduring commitment to serving the community have made it an important part of the village’s heritage. Beyond its role as a place of worship, First United Methodist Church has provided generations of residents with opportunities for fellowship, education, outreach, music, and service.

“The Historic Site of the Year designation recognizes places that have played a significant role in shaping the history and character of Downers Grove,” said local historian and Historical Society Board Member Lois Sterba. “First United Methodist Church has been an integral part of our community since the earliest days of the settlement, and we are honored to recognize its lasting contributions.”

The Historic Site of the Year award is presented annually by the Downers Grove Historical Society to celebrate buildings and sites that have made a lasting impact on the village’s history and help preserve the stories that define our community.
