Donald J. Drew was a lifelong resident of Downers Grove whose life was defined by music, community, and family. Born in 1904, he was the beloved son of Thomas W. and Olive Lamb Drew, and the devoted brother of Mildred “Millie” Drew and the late Howard C. Drew.
Donald’s love of music shaped his life’s work. For 48 years he served as organist at the First Congregational Church of Downers Grove, where his dedication and artistry enriched countless worship services. He was a co-founder and longtime accompanist of the Downers Grove Choral Society and an active member of the Downers Grove Music Club. A gifted composer of organ works, Donald’s contributions were recognized in 2004 when the Choral Society and Music Club presented a concert of his music in honor of his 100th birthday. That same year, the Village of Downers Grove proclaimed September 26, 2004, as “Donald J. Drew Day.”
Beyond his church and community roles, Donald worked professionally as a music consultant for Carl Fischer Music Company. He was deeply committed to charitable causes, especially those supporting children, the protection of wildlife, and environmental preservation.

Donald lived most of his life in the family home at 5256 Carpenter Street, built in 1888 by his grandfather, Matthew A. Lamb, and his wife Luella Lyon Roe Lamb. In 2007, this Gothic Revival residence became the first home to be designated a Village Landmark in Downers Grove.
Donald passed away in 2006 at the age of 102 and was laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery alongside his family members. For more than 90 years, he and Mildred shared their historic home. Upon her death in 2012, the house was left to benefit the music program of the First

United Methodist Church, where the Drew siblings had been members as children and later returned in adulthood. Proceeds from its sale created a lasting fund to support the church’s Chancel Choir cantatas, ensuring that live orchestral accompaniment continues to enrich worship—a legacy that carries forward Donald’s lifelong devotion to music.
