Stepping Up to the Plate: Historical Society Explores Baseball’s Past at Member Meeting

The Baked Apple provided a warm and welcoming setting for the Downers Grove Historical Society’s member meeting on Sunday, March 23. Attendees kicked off the gathering with a spread of classic “baseball eats,” including bagel dogs, popcorn, hamburgers, and fries—setting the perfect tone for an afternoon dedicated to America’s pastime.

Following refreshments, Bruce Allardice, Downers Grove professor of history and baseball historian, presented an interesting slide show and talk on the early days of “America’s Game:”  Baseball. He even brought a few fascinating baseball books to give out as “door prizes”.

After the presentation, the society held its annual business meeting which included the nomination and unanimous re-election of Lois Sterba and Ian Ogdon as Downers Grove Historical Society Directors.

With a mix of history, camaraderie, and community engagement, the event was a home run for all who attended!
