Thanks to Tom and Marlene Schroder, the American Foursquare at 4815 Forest Avenue is now recognized by the Historic Home Program. This house becomes the 81st house and 8th American Foursquare to receive honorary recognition in Downers Grove. This home features many American Foursquare characteristics including a square floor plan, hip roof, dormer, full front porch, and wood siding.
This house was named in honor of Lawrence and Hilda Pelling. While not the first owners, they lived in the house for over 50 years. Lawrence made his living as a farmer and butcher. He was raised in Lisle and later owned a meat market in Western Springs. The meat market was destroyed in a fire and the Pellings moved to this house in 1922. Before retiring, he ran a meat market on Main Street in Downers Grove. Lawrence passed away in 1941 and Hilda passed away in 1953.
