The Henry Kruse House
Location: 1404 Thornwood Drive, Downers Grove IL
Building style/form: Craftsman Bungalow
Date built: 1924
Historic Home Program

Built in 1924, the Henry Kruse House stands as a beautifully preserved example of the Craftsman Bungalow style. Named for its original owner, Henry Kruse, the home remained in the Kruse family from 1924 to 1946. According to the 1930 and 1940 U.S. Census, Henry Kruse worked as a secretary for a refrigeration company while residing at this Thornwood Drive address.

Architecturally, the home reflects the quintessential features of a Craftsman Bungalow: a low-pitched, broad gabled roof; exposed rafters and decorative brackets; a welcoming front porch; the use of natural, earthy materials; tapered columns; and solid, handcrafted detailing. These characteristics form the basis for the home’s approval under the category of Architectural Significance.

More recently, the property saw the addition of a deck in 2020 and a detached garage in 2021—updates that complement the historic structure while maintaining its character. Since 1946, the house has passed through approximately ten owners, each contributing to its enduring story.
