The Peter Leibundguth-Stillwell House
Location: 943 Maple Avenue Downers Grove IL
Building style/form: Queen Anne
Date built: 1860
Centennial Home

This stately Queen Anne Centennial Home at 943 Maple Avenue holds deep roots in Downers Grove history. Originally constructed around 1860 by Peter Leibundguth, a German immigrant and Civil War veteran, the home stands as one of the community’s enduring 19th-century treasures. According to the 1860 census, Leibundguth worked as a laborer and would go on to reside in the township for an impressive 75 years.

In 1865, Peter married Caroline Atzel, and together they raised thirteen children — six sons and seven daughters. Their large family included William, Henry Peter, Helene (Lena), Louis, Florence, Elenora (Laura), Louise, George, John, Lavina Ann, Cora Marie, and Amanda Barbara. Peter passed away in March 1911 and rests at Oak Hill Cemetery in Downers Grove.

Architecturally, the home reflects the Queen Anne style, a hallmark of the Victorian Romantic movement. Notable features include ornate long windows, bracketed gables, and an octagonal turret, which gives the home its distinctive silhouette. As described in The Book of Homes (1980, p. 276), the interior showcases “massive interior doors, original wainscoting, old glass door knobs, and a beautiful open stairway,” details that speak to the craftsmanship of its era.

The property first appeared in tax records in 1869. By 1871, it was owned by Ernest Kolson, and just a few years later, it was transferred to Tobias Atzel, Peter’s father-in-law. Ownership remained in the Atzel–Leibundguth family until 1905, when Peter and his son Louis acquired it. The home later passed to Hugh D. Wyllie, remaining under his name until 1940, followed by William B. Stillwell, whose family submitted the home for historic recognition.

In 1995, the house was officially approved as a Downers Grove Centennial Home, thanks to the efforts of Edna and William Stillwell.

Originally, the residence contained six rooms—three on each floor. Today, the property has been thoughtfully adapted for mixed use. The upstairs serves as a private residence, while the downstairs houses Realty Executives and Giana Lauren Lashes, Brows & Beauty, maintaining the home’s place as both a historic landmark and a part of the community’s daily life.

In 2023, the property entered a new chapter when it was purchased by the Downers Grove Park District, ensuring its preservation for future generations.
