The historic home at 4926 Saratoga Avenue is a charming and well-preserved example of late 19th-century residential architecture. Built in 1891—originally addressed as 56 Saratoga—this residence offers a meaningful glimpse into the early development and architectural character of Downers Grove.

A Home Rooted in Local History

Constructed for Edward and Mary Bentley, the home stood on land that was part of E.H. Prince and Company’s Addition to Downers Grove, a subdivision recorded in 1890 during a period of steady community growth. The Bentley family resided in the home from 1891 to 1918 and expanded their property in 1893 with the purchase of an adjacent lot, reinforcing the home’s presence along Saratoga Avenue.

In 1921, a new chapter began when the property passed into the hands of the Michael/Haller family, where it would remain for more than sixty years. Ownership transferred from Albert Michael Charles Haller to Marion and Zillah Haller, beginning a long period of family stewardship. Over the decades, the home passed through successive generations, including Emerson G. Michael and later Marion Kirn, reflecting the natural transitions of inheritance and marriage. This continuity of care speaks to the home’s importance not just as a structure, but as a place of lasting family connection. It was not until 1982 that the property left the extended family, closing a remarkable chapter in its history.

Today, the home is owned by Kate and Gavin Hutchinson, who continue the tradition of thoughtful stewardship.

Architectural Significance: Folk Victorian Style

The home is recognized for its architectural significance as a fine example of a Folk Victorian house. Popular in the late 1800s, this style brought decorative elements of more elaborate Victorian designs to modest, vernacular homes.

Character-defining features of the house include:

  • A steeply pitched, front-facing gable roof
  • Symmetrical window placement
  • Decorative trim detailing
  • A prominent front porch
  • Subtle influences from Queen Anne and Italianate styles

While it does not feature a wraparound porch, the home successfully incorporates many hallmark elements of the style, contributing to its historic charm and visual appeal.
