Building style/form: Folk Victorian
Date built: 1872
Historic Home Program

The Elbert A. Rogers House at 1001 Maple Avenue stands as a preserved example of Downers Grove’s early residential architecture. Built around 1872, this home reflects the modest yet charming design sensibilities of the era, combining Folk Victorian style with a distinctive Gabled Ell layout.

Though listed under the broad classification of “Other,” the house displays many hallmark features of the Folk Victorian tradition, including:

  • A steeply pitched, front-facing gable roof
  • Symmetrical window placement, echoing Italianate design
  • Decorative trim that adds subtle period charm
  • A large front porch, typical of homes from this era

While it does not include features like a wraparound porch or bay window, the home retains most of the defining characteristics of its style. Aside from a 1995 rear addition, it remains strikingly intact and true to its 19th-century appearance.

The home’s history is further enriched by its brief association with Francis A. Rogers, a Civil War veteran and longtime local public servant who lived here from 1920–1921. Though his residency was short, Rogers played a meaningful role in Downers Grove’s civic life, serving in various capacities including tax collector.

The Rogers family connection endured long after Francis’s stay—his sons and descendants owned the property until 1984, marking more than sixty years of continuous family stewardship.

Today, the Elbert A. Rogers House stands not only as a preserved piece of architectural heritage but continues to serve the community as a thoughtfully reused space for professional offices while maintaining its historic character.
