The Downers Grove Historical Society recently recognized two more Historic Homes. The Historic Home Program is an honorary program that is sponsored by both the Downers Grove Museum and the Downers Grove Historical Society.
The first home is the The William Straube House. This Queen Anne house at 5256 Fairmount Avenue is named in honor of long-time owner, William Straube. William Straube was a land developer and owner of the Straube Piano Company, which was located in downtown Downers Grove. Straube chose the highest spot in the subdivision to build his home. Even today it stands out prominently from the other homes in the area.
The second home we recently recognized is the The Louis Leibundguth House. Louis Leibundguth served as a Civil Carpenter for the Village of Downers Grove. We most likely have him to thank for many of the older buildings in the village that are still standing today. You may notice from the picture that The Louis Leibundguth House is not even a home. This building at 947 Maple Ave was originally used as a residence but in recent years has been repurposed for commercial use.
