Historic Home Program

This 19th century building at 947 Maple Ave was originally used as a residence but in recent years has been repurposed for commercial use.

This building is owned by the Downers Grove Park District.

This house was built about 1870. The original owners of the building were Mary and Samuel Curtiss. This home was one of the earliest homes on Maple Avenue.

The honorary name of the house is the Louis Leibundguth House, who lived here in the early part of the 20th century.  Louis was the son of Peter Leibundguth, who served in the Civil War. Louis was one of Peter’s thirteen children. Louis moved into the house after the death of his grandfather.

Louis served as a Civil Carpenter for the Village of Downers Grove. His responsibilities included insuring buildings were safe and built to modern building codes. We most likely have him to thank for many of the our historical buildings in the village still being upright and sturdy.
